Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross at Blackburn Cathedral now known as The Journey at Blackburn Cathedral. For more infomation visit www.thejourney.me.uk

The Journey at Blackburn Cathedral consists of fifteen 6ft oil paintings which hang throughout  the cathedral and form a ‘walking route’ to follow the way of the cross with Christ on his final journey. Each painting, which depicts one lonely figure, has been painted in such a way to challenge and speak to all who view them.

“We are not just observers of the journey of Christ,” says the artist Penny Warden, “rather we use His journey to help us to understand our journey through life.”

“This major and permanent exhibition of modern art is probably the most adventurous of its kind in any English cathedral. This extraordinary exhibition will be seen by generations come.” Canon Andrew Clitherow

"The most significant contemporary artistic commission in any church in the land" Canon Chris Chiver.

With accolades from Archbishop Desmond Tutu, “Wonderfully creative - The Journey has such considerable healing potential”, Archbishop Rowan Williams, “Outstanding and very moving work - I hope it will speak to many”, and Tom Wright, Bishop of Durham “remarkable” these extraordinary paintings will help to explain the meaning of Christ to a puzzled and agnostic generation and engage with people where they are in all the complexities of life in the 21st century.

“When you have walked the journey in Blackburn Cathedral you will leave having discovered a little more of what it means to be human in an age where inhumanity must not be allowed to win.” Canon Chris Chivers
